In 2020 I launched two books – The Fall (a novel set in a fictionalised version of the 2015 #FeesMustFall protests) and Living While Feminist (an edited collection of feminist essays). It was also the year that COVID-19 began to affect South Africa and the world in a significant way. Many of the interviews I did during this time took place virtually.
The Fall
I was interviewed by ENCA’s Book Review program about The Fall. We explored what the book was about, the importance of the #FeesMustFall protests, key themes of the novel, and why it’s a relatable novel.
Shafiq Morton on the Voice of the Cape Drivetime show interviewed me in depth about the book. There are lots of spoilers here so listen only if you’re not worried you’ll spoil the story.
Mabel Mnesa (from the incredible student funding organisation, Feenix) interviewed me about the book. You can watch that entire interview below, or learn more about Feenix here.
I appeared on the SABC Morning Live Books segment to talk about the book. We talked about why the #FeesMustFall protests were important, and unpacked some of the narratives around these protests.
Cliffordene Norton from Litnet interviewed me about The Fall. We discussed my inspiration for the novel, the lives of the characters, my research process and the reasons I write.
Bargain Books interviewed me for their blog, and we talked about speculative fiction in the South African context, and my work in gender equality.
I also chatted with my publisher, Carolyn Meads, about the process of writing the Fall, how the characters were developed, and provided some advice for budding writers. Listen here.
Living While Feminist
I was interviewed for The Book Club Blog about Living While Feminist, writing, and who I’d have at my author dinner table if I could.
The South African profiled Feminism Is as one of the five must-read non-fiction titles from South african female writers.
Thrive Global interviewed me for their piece on How to Check in on Others When You’re Physically Apart.
I was interviewed by Nancy Richards for the WomanZone podcast about feminism and writing.
