Hi readers and writers and everyone in between,
I’m writing to tell you a few things, so check out the headings and jump to the part that speaks to you.
In Other Stories 2025
I have a flash fiction, Birth in Zero Gravity, published in this wonderful collection of flash pieces. The collection was edited by Kerry Hammerton, who did a wonderful job of organizing the pieces and putting them in conversation with each other.
The collection should be available at book stores soon. If you’d like to order the collection from me, it’s R200.
Write with me this November
The best way to contact me about these workshops is via email, jenthorpewrites@gmail.com
Now, to the details:
- On Wednesdays (yes, that’s today), I’ll be hosting online writing meet ups.
- This Friday (14 November) I’ll be running a repeat of my October dialogue workshop for a bunch of people who were unable to make the original session. It takes place from 9 – 1pm, and the cost is R400 if you’d like to join.
- Then, I’ll be hosting two more writing workshops focussed on writing different forms. You can get all the info you need about those, here.
Great books I’ve read lately
I have just finished listening to the audiobook of The Safekeep, by Yael van der Wouden. Even though I picked up the twist early on, I was blown away by the book. The characterisation is sublime. She’s an artist in the way that she reveals personality through the character’s speech and action, and how the setting and time period of the story emerges in delicately woven details. It’s just fantastic. No wonder it won the Women’s Prize! I listened to this book for free thanks to the Libby App. If you have a library card, sign up for the app now to see what books and ebooks your local library has on their system.
Another library find was Martyr by Kaveh Akbar. I love how he’s managed the different timelines and reveals backstory through different chapters. It’s a great read.
Buy some books
Everyone knows the festive season is around the corner. If you’ve been looking for copies of my books, I’m now the best place to buy them. I’ve got copies of Living While Feminist, Adulting 101, The Peculiars and The Fall. All copies are available from me for R150 per book, and if you’d like it shipped in SA you can add an extra R89 to that (can fit up to four books in the shipping envelope, so you only need to pay for shipping once).
Have a great November everyone.
